The SBDC Student Partnership Project

The Illinois Small Business Development Center of McLean County at Illinois Wesleyan University (SBDC) exists to help enable small, local businesses to succeed by providing practical information, skills and strategies that make a measurable, positive impact on their businesses and, by extension, on the communities in which they work.

Each semester, we partner with university professors to find groups of high-performing juniors, seniors, and graduate students from Illinois Wesleyan University and Illinois State University to serve as Student Business Advisors for SBDC clients. These students gain valuable, real-world application experience while SBDC clients benefit from ideas and change that may help their businesses grow.

At this time, we have a limited number of Student Business Advisors each semester, so projects are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and are matched with our students’ areas of expertise. Therefore, the availability of project types can vary from one semester to the next.

Typical student projects include:

  • Marketing Strategy Analysis and Recommendations
  • Social Media Strategy Analysis and Recommendations
  • Marketing Logo and/or Tangible Marketing Creation
  • Website Creation via Wix Platform
  • Database research for small business solutions
  • Financial Analysis and Recommendations
  • Competitive Market Analysis and Market Research
  • Crisis Management/Risk Management Planning
  • Discovering gaps in the customer experience and identifying possible solutions
  • Cybersecurity Audit and Recommendations
  • Website Creation, Upgrades, and Integration

Generally, clients can expect to dedicate an average of two hours per week to working with their Student Business Advisor(s) for the duration of the project, which must be completed within the current semester.

At this time, we are accepting applications for Student Projects for Summer 2021: June 1 - July 20, 2021.
